Czech Testing – Summer School of Self-Development

From summer to autumn, pilot programmes—referred to as “testing”—took place across all countries involved in the Open Door project. In the Czech Republic, we gave the programme a unique identity under the name “Summer School of Self-Development.”

The programme brought together young people facing mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. Among the participants were also individuals who had experienced or were currently going through burnout. Despite these struggles, what united the group was a shared desire for growth, connection, and a safe, supportive space.

But let’s start from the beginning.

Building trust in nature

The summer months were dedicated to meeting each other, building trust, and experiencing nature not just as a backdrop—but as a partner. The group was open and diverse, bringing together young people from across the Czech Republic.

Our base was set in the beautiful nature of the Beskydy Mountains, in a yurt nestled beneath the Veřovice Hills. From the very beginning, the goal was clear: to explore oneself while discovering the healing and guiding power of nature.

Participants engaged in a wide range of outdoor activities, including mindful walks, rock climbing, paddling, and a one-day hike to the highest nearby peak, Velký Javorník.

These experiences were carefully combined with therapeutic activities such as sharing circles, reflective exercises like the “Tree of Strength,” and the use of therapeutic cards and many others.

Running like a golden thread through all the meetings were simple, beautiful moments—sitting together with coffee and cake, surrounded by stunning views. These moments became spaces for open conversations, connection, and the deepening of relationships.

All activities also worked with metaphor, helping participants transfer what they experienced in nature into their everyday lives.

Preparing for the expedition

As autumn approached, participants began preparing for the highlight of the programme: a multi-day expedition in the Rychleby Mountains.

This was not just any trip—it was a full backpacking experience. Participants carried everything they needed, including tents, sleeping bags, and food.

Through practical workshops, they learned how to pack efficiently, what equipment to bring, and how to move responsibly in nature, following the “Leave No Trace” principles. Step by step, they built not only practical skills, but also confidence.

A deep and transformative experience

The expedition itself became an unforgettable experience.

While the summer meetings allowed participants to slowly “peel away layers,” the expedition brought them much deeper. The experiences were raw, authentic, and powerful.

Through hiking in the stunning landscape, engaging in activities such as the “River of Life,” spending time alone during the “Solo,” and sharing within the group, participants were given a rare opportunity—to truly meet themselves.

Integration and closure

To help everything settle and to support the transfer of insights into everyday life, a final follow-up meeting was held.

This closing gathering offered space for reflection—on both light and shadow, on questions and answers that emerged throughout the journey. The programme ended with a ceremonial fire and an overnight stay, creating a meaningful and symbolic closure.

Throughout the entire programme, participants kept personal journals. These became companions on their journey, allowing them to reflect, track their progress, and return to their thoughts and experiences over time.

Gratitude and voices from participants

We are deeply grateful for every participant and every shared experience. We look forward to meeting again on future journeys into nature.

Here are a few words from the participants themselves:

“It was divine. The metaphorical comparison thrilled me and simplified many things.”

“Above all, I truly fell deeply in love with nature, found many parallels, connected with my true self, and most importantly, I tuned into and began to trust the vital life energy.”

“I’m taking with me the understanding that only I decide about myself, that I matter too, that I am valuable, that I can allow myself to say no, to rest, to take a breath.”

“It was unforgettable, and it was a very important — I dare say even life-changing — experience in my life.”
